"I dream high.. I soar high.. God is my gravity and my wings"- MaYa
"My words are immeasurable like music that lingers in your soul."- MaYa
My real name is Mary May born on the month of May which was a Mothers' Day. It's nice to have a screen name MAYA which is actually the former national bird in the Philippines! Thanks to Joy Ambayec Bangoy and Glowy Malipol for brainstorming this with me. I did felt that I have to have another self, another name, and this person will come out to be the best person in me. Maya is my dream “Me”.
How I started?
I started singing when I was 13 years old. Believe me I was such a “trying hard singer”. Thanks to my choir, THE PARA SA IYO CHOIR (PSIC)! They played a big role not just to the development of my voice, they too had been very supportive in bringing out the best in me and became my second family. This was the time actually when my dad passed away and I must say my choir had been one of the greatest blessings I've had in my entire life. I was the youngest among all the members during that time and most of them were like twice my age. Three of them became my ninong and ninangs in my confirmation who were the pioneers and great leaders of Para Sa Iyo Choir which is on its 5th generation now (40 years of existence) and is still singing for all occasions aside form their regular Sunday mass at San Roque Parish Mandaluyong City. Our musical director for many years now is from the world renowned choir, The Madrigal Singers, Mr. Ronaldo Bello. So I must say, I’m a Bello baby? hehe
At the age of 17, I started to sing professionally first at a yacht in Manila Bay with my stage mom who was always there to keep an eye on me. I then continued to work as a singer mostly for weddings until I graduated from college. Music had been my main bread and butter since then and it was a great help especially to my widowed mom who have raised me and my two other siblings.
Defining Moments...
It is not easy to start from scratch. Without an office, staffs and musicians who would always be available, these had been my challenge. The real challenge about starting anew is when you get to plant a new seed only to discover and grow with it.
In my almost three years running my music and event company, the best part about it is the fact that I went on with it even when there were times when I just wanted to give up. But then deep inside it was not only that pays the bills, it was only also what I know I can do best and whenever I felt that something was missing I NEVER STOPPED finding the missing holes. Until in 2012 when I finally decided to lay low in my business even if it was my main source of living. It was only then when I discovered another talent of mine which was TO WRITE SONGS. I wrote songs from my personal experiences and I continue to hone this gift as I pursue my singing career on a higher level. I started dreaming big. I aimed to become a local and international recording artist and I have been so blessed to the people that God allowed to cross my path to help me reach my dream. It’s still very challenging to be in this industry but the more difficult it gets the more songs I have composed.
As I slowly connect the dots, my faith becomes stronger. It is only through my life's failures; the broken bulbs and unforeseen unfortunate events that can truly make a Light. Now I see that it not just my voice that I shall bank on and develop but the voice inside of me.
All the while I thought I was just looking for a stable job but it is only through UNWAVERING FAITH that makes everything else stable. When I am STILL, I AM NOT JUST STABLE BUT TRULY VICTORIOUS. It is not always easy, but it would be if only I HAVE CONSISTENT FAITH, not just in my talent but to my intentions to it.
I am very blessed indeed and I am looking forward to bless others not just by my talents but by all that I am.
